Two people including a security guard were killed in separate incidents in the city recently. The victims were identified as mason Akkas Ali, 25, son of Foiznur, hailed from Sunamganj district and Mohammad Mofizur Rahman, 45, son of Mahbubul Haq Sawdagor also a night guard of Shema Steel Mills of the district.
Mason Akkas Ali died after falling from top floor of a six-storied under-construction building in city’s Textile area under Biyazid thana around 11. Police said Akkas received serious injuries after falling from the building. He was taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where the duty doctors declared him dead at about 3 pm, police sources said.
Security guard Mofiz also received severe injuries after hitting by a covered van in Bhanubazar area under Sitakundu upazila of the district around 11.30 pm last night.Alauddin Talukder, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police outpost, said critically injured Mofiz was rushed to the hospital at about 2 am today but the on-duty physicians declared him dead after his admission.The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue, Talukder said.Police detained the covered van and its driver and two separate cases were filed in these connections, he added.
Customs seized jarda consignment :
A preventive team of Chattogram Customs, Excise and VAT commissionerate seized huge quantity of Jarda (tobacco) worth about Tk three crore from Mirsarai upazila on Wednesday for evading excise and VAT duties.
Based on secret information, this jarda item was seized from a godown of Absar Traders located in Hinguli bazar of Mirsarai upazila.
The seized Jarda cartoon has taken away in the Vat commissionerate godown at Sadarghat old customs house premises in the port city.
A case has been lodged under sections of VAT and Excise regulations for evading of government taxes.
Customs and VAT commissioner Md. Enamul Hoque told BSS that acting on secret tip-off, 258 cartons of Hakimpuri jarda made of Kaus Chemical Works, Dhaka were seized.
