Two school-girls were allegedly killed after gang rape in Madaripur on Thursday.
The victims were identified as Sumaiya Akhter, 14 and Happy Akhter, 14. Both of them hailed from Mostafapur village under Sadar upzila were students of class eight of Mostafapur Bahumukhi High School.
Police arrested two persons named Shipon Sikder and Rafiqul Islam Sikder on suspicion of involvement in the incident. The bodies were sent to the Madaripur Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
Local sources said, a gang of four youths aged 18-20 years old brought the girls to the hospital in a critical condition at about 4:00pm. They said the sick girls had taken poison. Of the girls, Happy died at about 4:30pm. Herring the new of death, the youths fled away from the hospital. Later at about 6:00pm Sumaiya also died.
Sumaiya’s father Billal Sikder alleged that his daughter was killed after rape. Echoing the same, Happy’s mother said that the both girls went out of the house for private coaching at about 3:00pm.
When contacted, Officer-in Charge of Madaripur Police Station Ziaul Morshed told The New nation over telephone last night: “We are waiting for the post mortem report. We are still not clear about the reason behind the deaths. Both girls took poison. In preliminary investigation, we didn’t get any evidence about gang rape.”
On the other hand, Resident Medical Officer of Madaripur Sadar Hospital Rafiqul Islam said: “We have got evidence of posion on both girls mouth. But there were marks of injuries in the body of Sumaiya.”
