Remours of salt price hike spread in Kishoreganj town on Tuesday leaving consumers thronging shopes to buy the household essential.
Taking advantage of the remour, some unscrupulous businessmen were selling salt at Tk. 40 to Tk. 90 per kg. The normal price is Tk. 25-30 per kg.
Kishoreganj District Administration drivers led by ADC (General) Abdullah-al-Masud, Megistate Galib Mahamud and CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito at kitchen markets in the town on Tuesday noon.
The team fined shopers named Sumon Mia of Sumon Store Tk. 100,000 and Ajanta Shaha of Sonali Store Tk. 50,000 in Barabazar.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarowar Morshed Chowdhry told The New Nation that a mobile court conducted a drive to fight rumours about the salt price hike spread by some unscrupulous elements.
Sylhet Bureau reports: Rumours of a salt price hike spread in Sylhet city on Tuesday evening leaving consumers thronging shops to buy the household essential.
Taking advantage of the rumour, some unscrupulous businessmen were selling salt at Tk 40 to Tk 100 per kg. The normal price is Tk 30-35 per kg. Sylhet district administration, led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner Sumanta Banarjee and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Mejbah Uddin, conducted a drive around 9:00pm in different markets of the city.
The team fined a shop named Shimul Store Tk 45,000 at retail market Kalighat to sell salt at a higher price. Some 600 kg of salt was confiscated in the drive.
A shop owner of Mirzajangal area said he had sold around 20 kg of salt since Monday evening but did not want to disclose the selling price.
Sumit Dev, a consumer from Monipuri Rajbari area, said, ‘I’ve bought 4 kg salt at Tk 10 higher per kg.’
He said he had heard of the hike in salt price from the people.
Assistant commissioner Sumanta Banarjee told Prothom Alo that a mobile court conducted a drive to fight rumours about the salt price hike spread by some unscrupulous elements.
He said the confiscated salt would be sold in auction.
Bogura Correspondent adds : Rumors are spreading that the price of salt is rising in Bogura as the onion is reduced. Customers were shocked at the retail and wholesale shops.
It has been reported that since Tuesday morning, people have been rumored to raise salt prices. As a result, shopkeepers have to gain momentum to accommodate the buyers.
It is alleged that traders of small and large shops based in different areas stopped selling salt in the hope of making extra profit. This makes the rumor more wings.
In the afternoon, the market is seen, consumers are eating the hammer to buy salt. In this opportunity, most salt traders are paying extra Rs.
Buyers claim that the price of salt is going to rise. So they came to buy salt. However, no one could say where he heard such news.
Meanwhile, the Nandigram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Executive Magistrate Sharmin Akhtar denied the rumors of salt price hike. Sharmin Akhtar raided several shops.
Trader Shahidul Islam said the rumors of rising salt prices were shocking. Someone is buying 2 to 3 sacks of salt. He sold those sacks of salt from morning to noon.
Hafizur Rahman, who came to buy salt, said people are hearing that salt prices have risen. Many are buying salt today, fearing that tomorrow may increase several times.
UNO said, “The price of salt has not increased. This is a rumor. Action will be taken against those who put the rumor or reserve to create an artificial crisis. He urged people not to be misled.”
