Two BNP activists were killed in ‘gunfight’ with police at Begaritala under Monirampur upazila in Jessore district in the early hours of Wednesday.
The victims have been identified as Bazlur Rahman, 35, inhabitant of Jessore’s Monirampur upazila, and Saidur Rahman Syeed, 40, hailing from Dumuria upazila in Khulna district, our district correspondent said quoting Reshma Sharmin, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Monirampur circle) in the district.
Saidur Rahman used to live in the residence of his father-in-law Hatem Ali at Joypur village in Monirampur upazila, local sources said.
BNP leader and Mayor of Monirampur Municipality Shahid Iqbal Hossain claimed that the victims were their party activists.
ASP Reshma Sharmeen said that police detained the victims from Jaipur village in the evening on Tuesday and went to Begaritola area to retrieve hidden guns at around 2:00am.
But as soon as they reached the spot, their cohorts opened fire targeting the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate that triggered a ‘gunfight’. Saidur and Bazlur, came in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries, the police official said. Police took them to the Monirampur upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared them dead around 2:30am, she said.
Saidur and Bazlur were suspects in a case filed for torching, vandalizing and looting 70 houses of Awami League activists at Jaipur village on March 22 in 2013, the ASP said.
The bodies had been kept at Jessore Sadar Hospital morgue, she added.
On the other hand, Bazlur Rahman’s wife Reshma Begum claimed that police picked up the victims from Begaritala area in the afternoon and shot them to death at midnight.
