State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid yesterday said the government would bring Tungipara pourasava under light-emitting diode (LED) lighting through a pilot project.
“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India to enhance cooperation in energy preservation and Tungipara would be brought under LED lighting,” he told newsmen at a briefing at his ministry conference room.
The state minister said that the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) of Bangladesh and Indian Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) signed the MoU in Delhi last week.
“Around 55 percent electricity bill would be reduced by the LED lighting system. The project is expected to be completed by December 16 and the LED lighting system would be installed in other pourasavas,” he said.
Nasrul visited India with a view to discussing the bilateral energy issues between the two countries and met his Indian counterpart Dharmendra Pradhan.
The meeting also discussed cross-border power trade framework and import of additional 500MW and 100-MW electricity from India, he said.

Nasrul said that the Indian government agreed to allow electricity import from Bhutan using the Indian corridor.
