Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van and Transport Agency Owners’ and Workers’ Oikya Parishad called off their indefinite strike which was scheduled to begin on Sunday morning.
The leaders of the association took the decision following a meeting with Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at his office, said member secretary of Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van and Transport Agency Owners’ and Workers’
Oikya Parishad Kawser Ahmed Palash. “We have decided to withdraw the strike following an assurance from Minister Shahjahan Khan that our eight-point demand will be met through discussion with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader soon,” said Palash. They will go on strike again if their demands are not met even after discussion with Minister Obaidul Quader, added Palash. Bangladesh Road Transport Owners association president Moshiur Rahman Ranga, also State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives, its general secretary Khandaker Enyetullah, Road Transport and Highway Division Secretary M.A.N Siddique, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President M Siddiqur Rahman and other top officials of the ministry were present at the meeting. After the meeting, Minister Shahjahan Khan told reporters that their demands, including truck stand at Sayadabad and advantages of loading and unloading goods on truck on English road from 12am to 6am’, were solved in the meeting while the rest problems will be solved through discussions with the Road Transport and Bridges Minister. On October 20, the Oikya Parishad called an indefinite strike from November 6 (Sunday) demanding their eight-point demands.
