DU student's rape: Tribunal takes cognisance of charges against accused Majnu

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 of Dhaka on Sunday took cognisance of the charges against Md Majnu, the lone accused in the case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University student in the capital’s Kurmitola area in January.
Scrutinising the case dockets and other documents, Judge Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the 7th Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal passed the order.
Later, the judge fixed August 26 for charge framing hearing against the accused in the case. The judge directed the jail authorities to produce Majnu before it on the next date.
On March 16, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique, who is also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Majnu to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka.
Besides, the IO brought charges of assaulting the girl and snatching victim’s mobile phone, wristwatch and money from her possession.
On January 5, a student of Dhaka University was raped after she was forcibly taken away from near Kurmitola bus stop to a solitary place near Shewra Rail-gate at around 7:30pm after she got off a DU bus.
She regained consciousness around 10:00pm, then she managed to reach her friend’s house. Her friend later took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The next day, the girl’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing unknown people.
On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 30-year-old Majnu from Shewra area. On January 16, Majnu gave a confessional statement to a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate.
