Massive tree plantation could be the most effective measure to mitigate adverse impacts of climate change in keeping the planet habitable and improving environment, ecology and biodiversity.
The observations came at the concluding ceremony of 10-day National Tree Plantation Campaign and ‘Wood and Fruit Tree Fair-2016’ held at Government Auditorium premises in the sub-Himalayan Panchagarh district town on Friday.
The district administration, Social Forestry Division, Department of Forest (DoF) and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) jointly organised the event for creating mass awareness among the common people on the necessity of tree plantation.
Member of the Parliament from Panchagrh-2 constituency Nazmul Haque Prodhan attended the concluding ceremony and distributed prizes and certificates among the best stall owners as the chief guest.
With Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Amal Krishna Mandal in the chair, Panchagarh Zila parishad Administrator Abu Bakar Siddique, Police Super Giasuddin Ahmed, Divisional Forest Officer Abdul Awal Sarker, Deputy Director of the DAE Rafikul Islam addressed the occasion as special guests.

President of district nursery owners’ association Abul Kalam Azad and nursery owners Masud Rana, Saiful Islam and also spoke.
Different government and non- governmental organisations, private sector nursery owners and entrepreneurs had set up 20 stalls in the fair displaying saplings of many varieties of fruit, timber and medicinal plants.
The speakers expressed serious concern over the changing climate at alarming rates causing catastrophes like super cyclones, tsunamis, bush fires, droughts and devastating floods threatening the habitation, environment, ecology, agriculture and every sector.
Abdul Awal Sarker narrated the beneficial aspects of forests, important roles of trees in human life and cited examples of the Sundarbans that saved millions of lives when the super cyclone sidr hit the coastal belts of the country in 2007.
Rafikul Islam said tree plantation could mitigate climate change impacts and protect the environment, ecology and biodiversity to save innumerable living species, including animals, birds, insects, aqua animals including fishes from extinction.
The chief guest urged the common people for turning tree plantation into a social movement and asked everyone to plant at least three saplings annually to maintain natural balance and get economic benefits side by side mitigating climate change impacts.
