Most of the public transports in the capital city are operating defying the health guidelines and government fixed fare charts sending the city dwellers in a state of serious health risk and financial stringency.
During a recent visit to the different areas of the city it was seen that the conductors and helpers of the buses were picking up and dropping the passengers everywhere. Most transports do not have hand sanitizer or disinfectant spray. The helpers or the conductors are following their old tradition of picking up the passengers into the bus.
Some passengers alleged that most of buses were not maintaining the charts, while realizing the fare from them. Moreover the new chart of increased fares was not seen hanging in most buses.
Meanwhile, number of the vehicles increased on roads while the rush of passengers increased during the office time amid the prevailing coronavirus situation when both death toll and infections were on the rise.
On June 1, the government eased the restrictions and allowed bus services to resume which remained shut since March 26 to contain the spread of Covid-19
Following the requests of the bus owners, the government announced a 60 per cent increase of all bus fares and directed them to carry only 50 per cent passengers to maintain social distancing and follow other health regulations.
On Tuesday, 16 days after the ease of the restrictions, scenario on roads showed an increasing tendency to breach the health rules by both the transport workers and the passengers.
On June 1, workers on most of the city service buses were seen to spray hand sanitizers on the hands of the passengers, but, on Tuesday, most of the workers of the buses were seen not using sanitizers.
In the capital, most of the bus operators allowed their workers to take passengers more than 50 per cent of capacity, especially during office time.
The Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader earlier said that bus terminals and buses could become epicenters of coronavirus proliferation if the transport workers and passengers continued to ignore the health regulations.
He also said that he received allegations that some of the public transports were charging extra fare. Allegation of charging extra was also found in long route buses.
