Chattogram Bureau :
In Chaktai-Khatunganj, the business hub of the port city , the stagnation in the transportation of coommodities by waterways started with the . the construction of a slitch gate at the estuary of of Chaktai canal, for a long time, the navigation through the canal was stopped. However, recently one side of the embankment in front of the sluice gate was cut off so that small boats could enter through the bottom of the gate at high tide.
It is learned that the suffering of the traders is being alleviated to some extent.
Traders say goods are transported from Chaktai-Khatunganj to Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar, Maheshkhali and Hatia , Sandwip and Noakhali in Chittagong.
But the boat could not enter for a long time due to construction of switch gate with embankment at Karnafuli estuary of Chaktai canal.
So the traders were forced to hire a transport to transport the goods and take the goods to and from Karnafuli estuary. Now that small boats can enter, the transportation cost of traders will be saved.
Some businessmen in Chaktai-Khatunganj said that in mid-2016, the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) took the initiative to build a slitch gate.
The pace of work was somewhat sluggish at the beginning of the project. However, the recent increase in the pace of work has given hope to the traders. At present, the Chaktai Canal, which is plagued by various problems, has become a source of grief for traders like the ‘Huangho River of China’s grief’.
In the last two decades, the canal has lost its navigability permanently due to illegal construction on both sides of the Chaktai canal, filling of the canal with siltation and paving of the floor.
