Attack on bus drivers: Transport strike observed in Rangamati

Transport owners and workers of the district observed an indefinite strike on 14 roads and six waterways in the district from yesterday demanding arrest of those responsible for an attack on six bus drivers. Rangamati Road and Waterway Transport Owners-Workers’ Oikya Parishad announced the strike from a press conference at the office of Rangamati-Chittagong Motor Owners’ Association in the town on Tuesday.
Additional police members have been deployed in the district town. Meanwhile, the Rangamati District Bus Workers’ Union has suspended bus operation on the Rangamati-Chittagong Road in protest against the assault on the six bus drivers on Monday. On Monday night, the six bus drivers were beaten up by miscreants following a brawl between some transport workers and local shopkeepers in Old Bus Station area in the town. A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station in this connection. Police have already arrested two suspects-Hafizul and Monzu.
Indefinite transport strike on Ctg-Coxsbazar highway from next week: Bahaddarhat Regional Bus Terminal Management Committee will enforce indefinite bus strike on Chittagong-Coxsbazar Highway from September 1, next if the Bahaddarhat terminal is not renovated by August 31 next. This was disclosed by the General Secretary of the Chittagong District Transport Owners Group Abul Kalam Azad in a press release issued to the press on Tuesday .
The press release was told that the city’s only bus terminal was not repaired or renovated since its construction and in the meantime, a number of prayers were given to the concerned authorites but not successful results as yet sighted. It also said if the concerned authority fails to renovate the terminal by August 31 next, they will enforce indefinite transport strike on this highway.
