UNB, Dhaka :
The Supreme Court on Monday sentenced Hazi Abdus Shaheed, owner of Bismillah Paribahan, to one month’s imprisonment on contempt of court charge.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, handed down the verdict.
Court sources said Abdus Shaheed built a multi-storied building grabbing the land of one Shyamal Kanti Das at Ram Krishna Mission Road in the Habiganj municipality area.
Shyamal Kanti Das filed a case against him in 2011.
Later, 1st Joint District Judge of the district slapped an injunction on the construction work.
On January 27, 2012, the High Court stayed the lower court order following a petition filed by Abdus Shaheed.
Meanwhile, Shyamal Kanti Das filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against the HC order in 2013. The Supreme Court directed the authorities concerned to maintain the status quo on the construction work of the building.
Shyamal Kanti later filed an appeal with the Appellate Division as Abdus Shaheed continued the construction work defying the SC order.
On April 6, 2014, the Appellate Division asked the authorities of Habiganj municipality to remove the structure.
On April 5 this year, the court summoned Abdus Shaheed, acting mayor of Habiganj municipality Peyara Begum, secretary Nur Azam bin Akter and Engineer Madhusudan Das to appear before it on May 4 for failing to comply with the court order.
