The farmers have started transplantation of Boro rice seedling to make the intensive farming programme of the major cereal crop successful in Rangpur agriculture region during this Rabi season.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the farmers have already prepared Boro rice seedbeds on 28,106 hectares of land exceeding the fixed target of preparing the same on 23,183 hectares of land in the region.
“The farmers have already transplanted Boro rice seedling on 500 hectares of land as the process will get full momentum by this month end in the region,” said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE at its regional office here Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam.
Meanwhile, transplantation of Boro rice seedling continues in full swing in the low-lying lands, beels, haors and riverine areas now as harvest of the crop will complete there before commencement of the next rainy season.
The government has fixed a target of producing over 20.88-lakh tonnes of clean Boro rice from 4.97-lakh hectares of land for all five districts of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat in Rangpur agriculture region.
“The farmers will produce 8.16-lakh tonnes of hybrid variety Boro rice from 1.71-lakh hectares of land, 12.68-lakh tonnes of high yielding variety rice from 3.23-lakh hectares and 3,952 tonnes of local variety Boro rice from 2,037 hectares of land,” Islam added.
Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office Md Moniruzzaman told BSS that adequate steps have been taken to ensure smooth supply of seed, fertilisers, electricity and delivering technologies to make the Boro rice farming successful this season.
“The farmers are adopting conservation agriculture technologies like Alternate Drying and Wetting irrigation method at a larger scale while farming Boro rice to save irrigation water for increasing Boro rice output at reduced costs,” Moniruzzaman added.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Md Shah Alam said the farmers are preparing their lands in full swing to transplant Boro rice seedling in all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region.
“The DAE and other agriculture-related organisations, Power Development Board and Rural Electrification Board are ensuring smooth supply of seed, fertilisers and electricity to the farmers to ensure smooth Boro rice cultivation this season,” he said.
The farmers would not facing any hurdle as the authorities concerned have taken adequate steps to assist the farmers in all possible ways as part of the comprehensive steps taken by the government for cultivating Boro rice successful this season.
Alam hoped that the farmers would largely adopt conservation agriculture technologies in farming Boro rice to increase its output reducing lifting of underground water, saving electricity and improving environment this season in the region.
Farmers Ariful Haque, Manik, Mian, Echhahaq Ali, Fazlul Haque, Aiyub Ali and Mofizar Rahman of different villages in Rangpur said their Boro rice seeding were ready on the seedbeds for transplantation and they would complete the process by the next two weeks.
