Time-befitting training for the grassroots level women public representatives and other women leaders is very important to flourish their leadership capacity, speakers at a participatory discussion said.
They viewed flourished leadership power is always helpful for developing and infusing dynamism into the local level civic services.
They said this yesterday while addressing the closing session of a two-day leadership and skill development training for 25 women public representatives and members of women development forum in Rajshahi.
Prip Trust, a non-government development organization, arranged the training on “Role of Women Representatives in reserved Seats of Local Government Institutions” at BRDB Hall room in Tanore Upazila Parishad Complex of the district. ‘ Aparajita: Political Empowerment of Women supported the event in association with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Main thrust of the programme was to build confidence, knowledge and capacity of elected women representatives and encourage network of mutual support so that they can fulfill their obligations to their voters.
With Bondona Rani Pramanik, Vice-chairman of Tanore Upazila Parishad, in the chair, public representatives Momena Ahmed, Sonabhan Begum and Ayesha Begum and Prip Trust Regional Manager Saiduzzaman Shipon and Programme Officer Azizur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
The discussants viewed that many of the social problems like early marriage, polygamy, drug-addiction, dowry, gender discrimination and violence against women could have been reduced to a greater extent if active participation of the women representatives were ensured.
Participation of women members in the reserved seats in the LGIs activities aren’t ensured properly due to various reasons. For this reason, the women representatives are facing many problems during performance of duties as their responsibilities haven’t been specified by any rules as yet.
To address the odd situation, emphasis should be given on building confidence, knowledge and capacity of them.
Ensuring equal rights to the women members in reserved seats in Union Parishad and other local government institutions is very important for their empowerment and congenial working atmosphere.
