Under the auspices of Crab-traders’ Association of Bagerhat district, a big human chain was formed at Bhaga point of Khulna-Mongla Highway under Rampal Upazila in Bagerrhat district on Thursday noon demanding export of crabs to China immediately after solving all the government formalities for the greater interest of thousands of people who are now involved in crab cultivation, trading, selling and exporting. It was attended by several hundred crab traders of Bagerhat (district town) main Bazar, Mongla, Digraj, Chalna, Foila, Rampal, Bhaga. areas, a good number of crab Traders’ Associations, and more than one thousand Crab-farmers (cultivators) of the district.
The human chain was addressed among others by Md. Jalal Uddin Dulal, General Secretary of Rampal Sadar Union Parishad unit of Bangladesh Awami League, Ajoy Kumar Biswas, General Secretary of crab Traders’ and Suppliers’ Association, Dipankar Majumdar, President of the association of the district, Md. Arif Billah, General Secretary of Digraj Bazar Crab-traders’ Association, Ukil Uddin Izaradar, leader of Mongla Crab-traders’ Association, Asim Kumar Saha, President of Bagerhat (district town) Crab Bazar Traders’ Association and Sadhan Kumar Saha, General Secretary of the association.
The speakers from the human chain said that, a huge quantity of crabs were exported to China every year from the country previously. As a result, both the people involved with the crab cultivation and trading as well as the government used to earn a lot of foreign currencies. But just with the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in the world export of the crab has been stopped for more than last five months. As a result, on the one hand the government is incurring loss of several crores of foreign currencies and on the other hand, more than one lakh families of the district involved with crab industry suffered a huge loss of money and they have been forced to live a sub-human life.
The speakers added, at that time (previously) crab was exported to China at Tk. 1, 500 to Tk. 2, 000 per kg, according to qualities. But at present the same quantity of crab is now being sold at Tk. 300 to Tk. 400 only. Consequently, crab traders, producers and exporters are now on the verge of ruin.
