Tourist cop stabbed to death by muggers

An on-duty Tourist Police constable has been stabbed to death by a gang of muggers at Labonee Point on the Cox’s Bazar beach.
The victim, Pervez Hussain, 30, died while trying to capture a mugger,
 who with others, was snatching valuables from some tourists.
He is son of Bashir Uddin from Gaurisen village in Comilla Sadar upazila.
Though Police caught two muggers from the spot, others escaped.
The detained muggers are Abu Taher, 28, and Abdul Malik, 24, from Ghonarpara area of the district town, police said.
Assistant Superintendent of Chittagong Division Tourist Zahirul Islam said, “A gang of muggers were snatching valuable things and money in cash from some tourists at Labonee Point in the morning. Hearing the hue and cry of victims, a team of Tourist Police went to rescue the tourists and chased the gang of muggers instantly.”
Parvez chased the muggers, riding on a motorcycle from in front of the Civil Surgeon’s Office around 7.30am, the police official said.
“At one stage of chasing, Parvez stopped snatchers, but the muggers stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said. Police were trying to track down and detain other muggers, he said.
Hospital’s emergency unit doctor Nobel Kumar Barua said that Parvej was stabbed eight times in his chest and abdomen.
Hearing the news, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque expressed profound shock.
