CU Correspondent :
The “deprived” Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders of Chittagong University (CU) unit, who were protesting the newly formed BCL committee at the university, yesterday called off their indefinite strike after a “fruitful” meeting with BCL central leaders in the port city.
During the meeting, the BCL central leaders asked them to give a list of those deprived of posts in the committee.
They gave the list to the central leaders accordingly, said the BCL sources.
Rezaul Karim, one of the protesters, said they withdrew the strike following a successful meeting with BCL central committee president Saifur Rahman Shohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain.
The deprived CU BCL leaders had been demonstrating since July 18, just after a 201-member full-fledged committee of the unit was announced. On July 20, they enforced the strike.
“The crisis is over. The deprived leaders withdrew their strike, as we assured them of considering their demands,” said Jakir.
The central leaders also imposed a ban on “CU shuttle train politics”, which often leads to clashes between the BCL factions at CU.
They also warned them of taking stern actions if any of them gets involved in such compartment-based politics.
Academic activities at the university remained adjourned from Wednesday, as the Bangladesh Railway (BR) authorities shut down its shuttle services on the CU route after an attack on a train allegedly by BCL men, which left two people, including a police official, injured.
With the railway authorities deciding to resume its services on the route tomorrow, the regular academic activities will follow suit.
