Franchises didn’t hold themselves back on day one of the 2014 IPL Auctions, going on a spending spree that saw Royal Challengers Bangalore splashing as many as Rs 14 crore on Yuvraj Singh while Delhi Daredevils spent Rs 12.5 crore on wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.
Yuvraj became the costliest player of the season, earning more than the amount paid (Rs 12.5 crore) to the first player retained by the franchises during the retention window in January, which included names like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
Kevin Pietersen was the other top grosser, when a bidding war saw him being lapped up by Sunrisers Hyderabad before Delhi Daredevils decided to use their ‘Right to Match’ to keep him on their side for Rs 9 crore.
