Tomato cultivation gains popularity in Netrakona

Cultivation of tomato gained much popularity among the vegetable cultivators in different rural areas of the district in recent years for being a profitable variety.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said many farmers have started showing their keen interest to cultivate tomato on their arable and fallow land on a commercial basis for the whole season to get much economic benefit.
Over 1,500 farmers have cultivated tomato on 80-bigha of land in different areas of the district and the farmers achieved bumper production of the variety just ended summer season and they became happy for getting fair prices against their product.
Tomato cultivator Faruk of Katli area of the district town said he has already earned Taka about 70,000 by selling tomato on his one bigha of land.
Akkas Mia of Takurakona village under Sadar upazila said that he will be capable to earn several lakh of taka by selling the variety to be produced on his farm lands during the coming winter season.
Deputy Director of DAE Samir Kumar Sarker told BSS that many farmers started showing their more interest for bringing their high and fallow land under the cultivation for whole season as they could earn more profit. The field-level officials of DAE including crop specialists have started their work for giving inspirations to the farmers to bring all the house premises and fallow lands under tomato cultivation to meet the demand as well as boosting the rural economy, he added.
