UNB, Dhaka :
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Monday said the government has taken all necessary measures to keep the commodity market under control ahead of and during the fasting month of Ramzan.
“The commodity market was normal during the last Ramzan, and it’ll remain under control this time, too,” he said.
The minister came up with the assurance while talking to reporters after a meeting with visiting Indian Commerce Secretary Shri Rajeev Kher at the Secretariat.
Replying to a question, Tofail said the upcoming budget would cast no adverse impact on the commodity market.
Asked about the TIB study that says the recent city polls were not fair, the minister trashed its findings and alleged that the TIB never recognises the government’s good works as it always criticizes the government since its inception. “The city elections were held in a free and fair manner,” he claimed.
According to a Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) study report released on Monday, the elections recently held to three city corporations-Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) — were not free, fair and neutral.
Sought comments about the trade agreement between India and Bangladesh, he said the draft of the deal has been finalized and it will be signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Dhaka visit.
Under the agreement, Tofail said Bangladesh transports will be able to go to Nepal using Indian corridors and it will usher in a new era in relations among the neighbouring countries.
About the duty-free access of 225 Indian products for which the big neighbour had long been pressing for, Tofail said a decision was taken at today’s secretary-level Bangladesh-India meeting to provide duty-free access of 23 Indian products to Bangladesh.
The Commerce Minister also said more ‘border haats’ will be set up along the Bangladesh-India border in addition to the existing three.
