The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reported a collection of over Tk 9.03 billion at the Income Tax fair over the last three days.
On Friday alone, collections topped Tk 2.23 billion.
Total 18,106 persons filed Income-Tax returns and more than 119,000 availed of the services made available at the fair.
A team from Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts visited the fair led by its Chairman Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir.
Several other MPs who are in the committee joined Alamgir.
“The fair has reduced the distance between NBR and the taxpayers. This will help boost tax collection and national economic growth,” said Alamgir.
MP Moin Uddin Khan Badal said the Income Tax Fair has helped bring down the ‘fear of tax authorities’.
He demanded that the NBR should strictly monitor lawmakers and check on whether they were paying tax properly.
Another MP, Md Rustum Ali Faraji, said the discipline evident in the Fair was praiseworthy.
“If this is how it goes, people will come forward to pay taxes round the year. That will boost collections and help fulfil national revenue targets. If that happens, we will not have to go looking for foreign aid.”
Better realisation of income tax holds the key to national economic growth, said educationist Jamilur Reza Choudhury at the fair.
