Tk 5530cr capital deficit in 3 state banks: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday told Parliament that the total amount of capital deficit in
three state-owned commercial banks-Sonali Bank, Rupali Bank and Basic Bank – now stands at Tk 5530 crore.
“There’s capital deficit in three banks-Sonali Bank, Rupali Bank and Basic Bank- out of the six state-owned commercial banks,” he said replying to a tabled starred question from Awami League MP Kamal Ahmed Majumder (Dhaka-15). The amount of the capital deficit is Tk 2,850 crore at Sonali Bank,
while Tk 2236 crore at Basic Bank and Tk 444 crore at Rupali Bank, the minister said.
The three other state-owned commercial banks are Janata Bank, Agrani Bank and BDBL. Muhith said the government helps remove the capital deficit through keeping the budgetary allocation for recapitalisation of the banks. Besides, he noted, a number of measures taken for making the banks profitable ones.
