Tk 40,000cr proposed for social safety in 145 sectors

The government has proposed Taka 40,000 crore allocations for 35 ministries in the 2016-17 fiscal year giving special importance on 145 sectors to bring almost all poor people of the country under social safety net by 2022.
According to “National Economic Review -2016” report, around 3.57 crore people are now living below the poverty line. The allocation for social safety net was Taka 37,546 crore in 2015-16 fiscal year.
But in 2016-17 financial year, the allocation for only social welfare and protection sector is Taka 18,339 crore.
Under the programme, financial assistance or employment opportunities would be provided to poor capable men and women from 19-59 year old. Food for Work Programme would be taken for unemployed persons. But men would not get cash money.
Widow, divorcee, destitute, single mother and unemployed single women would get allowances. Besides, free treatment and financial assistance would be provided to ensure maternal healthcare.
Under these programmes, 35 ministries separately have spent total Taka 37,546 crore in implementing the programmes.
