The government on Tuesday launched a Taka 250 crore new project for developing land and other resources in the Chittagong Hill Tracks (CHT) so people cess to better livelihood. State Minister of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing inaugurated the “Strengthening Inclusive Development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (SID-CHT)” project at a city hotel.
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with USAID and Danida is providing financial support to the project, which is a continuation of another project -“Promotion of Development and Confidence Building in the CHT”. The state minister said there has been significant advancement in the socio-economic development of the CHT, but the overall development is still not satisfactory compared to other areas in the plain land.
“The new project will support the government to continue development in the Hill Tracts and enable the institutions of the CHT and local communities to pursue accelerated and sustainable socio-economic development,” he said.
Like the previous one, the new project will also be implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs. “The purpose of development interventions in CHT is to help people pursue their development aspirations in peaceful democratic environment,” said Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP Bangladesh Acting Country Director while addressing the event.
