Tk 184cr for poura water, sanitation project

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved a Tk 184 crore Pourashava Water and Sanitation project, aiming to provide safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to 40 pourshavas in the country’s all the seven divisions.
This is the second phase of the project as its first phase was implemented in 38 pourashavas earlier in fiscal 2007-08.
The approval came at an Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room with its Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said five development projects involving Tk 615 crore were approved yesterday. The funds for implementing the project will come from the national exchequer.
He also said that some 168 development projects have so far been approved by Ecnec in the current fiscal year involving Tk 97, 242 crore.
Planning Commission sources said that, the Pourashava Water and Sanitation project would help minimise the spread of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases in the project areas. It will also help improve the lifestyle of the people of the concerned areas.
The project activities include the construction of 12 water treatment plants, 12 overhead tanks, 1500 water points and 60 public toilets. It also includes setting up of 100 test tube-wells, 50 production wells, 50 pump houses and installation of 440 kilometers of pipelines of different diameters.
The Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) will implement the project during July 2013-June 2017 period.
The ECNEC meeting also approved the revision of ongoing ‘Nakla-Nalitabari-Nakugaon road improvement project’ spending Tk 240 crore which was Tk 171 crore at the time of its original approval.
The core objective of the project is to ensure a rapid and safe communication network through Nakla-Nalitabari-Nakugaon road by turning it into a national highway. This will ensure hassle-free goods transportation and enhance export-import activities of Nakugaon land port in Sherpur district.
The other projects approved at the meeting are ‘Government Shishu Paribar Hostel construction (8 unit) project’ (Tk 73.48 crore-GoB);
‘Establishment of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Dental College, Gopalganj’ project (Tk 88.70 crore-GoB) and ‘Kurigram-Ulipur-Chilmari road development (1st revised) project’ (Tk 28.67 crore-GoB).
Asked about the proposed Dental College in Gopalganj, the Planning Minister said that currently there are three government dental colleges in Rajshahi, Chittagong and Dhaka, and the fourth one will be established in Gopalganj. More dental colleges will be set up gradually in other areas of Bangladesh, he added.
Ecnec members, including Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, ministers concerned, members of the Planning Commission, secretaries and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
