Awami League (AL) lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari on Sunday filed a Tk 10 crore defamation case against the Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, its Staff Correspondent Mamunur Rashid and three other unknown persons in Feni for publishing a report on January 23.
The lawmaker from Feni-2 Constituency and also Feni district AL General Secretary, filed a case with the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Moshiur Rahman of the district.
In the complaint, the MP said Iqbal Sobhan, out of jealousy with the fame of Hazari, published a news item in his daily on January 23 under the headline ‘Police await PM’s order to crack down on drug lords’ which tarnished his reputation.
The newspaper also mentioned names of Abdur Rahman Badi MP in Cox’s Bazar, Shamim Osman MP in Narayanganj, and Enamul Haq, MP in Rajshahi. Even the daily also published their photographs to “defame them”, the complainant said.
“The court took the case into cognisance, but did not pass any order immediately,” said Advocate Anwarul Karim Faruq, the complainant’s lawyer.
