EID ul Azha or ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’, is the second of two such holidays celebrated worldwide each year by Muslims. It honors the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to the command of Allah. In commemoration of this intervention, an animal, is sacrificed ritually and the meat distributed to the poor and needy.
This year we have been undergoing national suffering — both in the shape of a national pandemic which has viciously disrupted our economic cycle and in the form of an administration which has failed to take adequate measures to prevent the pandemic from spreading. What is so sad and despicable is that by reckless corruption the health system is empty of treatment facilities. But no fear for punishment. Those who die are just unlucky.
We wish Eid Mubarak knowing painfully that for millions of people the occasion will not be a celebration. They do not know where the next meal will come from. Let us hope that those who have made easy money to have now some conscience to help those who are in desperate situation. The middle class and jobless ones are hardest hit. We want unity among our people to help others.
It has been proved that our people have limitless patience and that is their misfortune. Our educated ones are exploiting the general public in the belief that everything goes with our people. Things have gone too far and they must turn around and resist injustices.
Since we know that almost 95 per cent of the people have registered as drop in their average incomes according to a BRAC survey made in May, it is doubtful if the demand for cattle will pick up just before Eid. We are accustomed to making sacrifices in the form of animals like goat or sheep. This year the wealthy should decide to sacrifice some of their economic power to help the poorest households in need, as official aid to them is almost non existent. If we understand the true spirit of Eid ul Azha, then all sacrifices are of importance — it is the intention which counts, and not the big cows or camels.
