UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh will play 12 Test and 8 ODI series in the next ICC leagues as per the ICC’s proposed schedule which was worked out in the ICC board meeting in London on Friday.
As per proposed schedule, the top-nine Test teams will play 12 Test series — minimum of two Test matches per series — on a home-and-away basis in the Test league over a four-year cycle in 2019-20123.
The proposal also contains an ODI league of the top 13 teams to be played over two years from 2020.
The 10th ranked Test side Zimbabwe got no space in the league along with the ICC new full members Ireland and Afghanistan — 11th and 12th Test-playing nations respectively.
Afghanistan and Ireland have been approved as Full Members nations by the ICC as the approval was signed off by the ICC Board in London during the ICC’s AGM on Thursday (June 22).
ICC will formalise the plan with more detailed schedule, including dates, terms and conditions, in the ICC meetings in October.
According to proposed schedule, Bangladesh will play against Australia, India, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. The Tigers will face each Australia and South Africa for one Test series.
The new Test League is likely to start immediately after the 2019 World Cup and will run till the beginning of the 2023 World Cup. It will conclude with a play-off between the top two teams at the end of the cycle.
The 13 ODI sides will be determined according to the rankings as per a cut-off date specified by the ICC. In ODI league, each team will only play eight opponents instead of all 12 as the 13-team ODI league for World Cup qualifying will be reduced into two years instead of three.
ICC CEO David Richardson said that they were still formulating as to which eight opponents each teams play to make it “as fair as possible.”
As per the proposed schedule, Bangladesh will face England, Afghanistan, Ireland, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the ICC ODI league.
