Bangladesh faced off New Zealand in the last ODI of the three-match series on Friday. The Tigers lost the match by a big margin of 164 runs. Tamim Iqbal’s team is conceded whitewash to the Black Caps after losing all the matches of the series.
Batting first after winning the toss at Basin Reserve, the host New Zealand gave Bangladesh a target of 318 runs. Chasing the target, the Tigers were all out for just 154 runs.
In reply to the target, Bangladesh lost the wicket of captain Tamim Iqbal at the beginning of the innings. After playing maiden in the innings’ first over, Tamim took one run by playing one ball in the second over. Latham later caught the second ball of Matt Henry’s third over behind the wicket.
Tamim scored only 1 run off 9 balls! However, Liton Das, on the other hand, started playing in a fluent manner. He hit a boundary in the first and the last balls of Trent Boult’s second over Later, Liton brought the same result in the first ball of Henry’s 5th over.
Although Liton playing fluently, there was no one to accompany him. In the third ball of the fifth over, Soumya Sarkar – came down to number three – was caught with a fine leg while playing an unnecessarily big shot. Soumya – who failed in the entire series – made 1 run off 8 balls.
Although Tamim-Soumya went to the dug-out, Liton was playing like himself. But he had to stop with an incredible catch by Trent Boult. Liton became the victim of the top edge when it comes to pulling the ball outside the off-stump. Boult grabbed it from Thirdman with incredible agility. As a result, Liton’s 21-run innings came to an end.
In the 7th over of the innings, Bangladesh lost three wickets in the top order for just 26 runs and fell into deep trouble. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun formed a resistance from there. Even though the run wheel stopped, these two did not allow the wicket to fall. After handling the Henry-Boult, they tried to save their wickets by gnashing their teeth against Kyle Jamieson and James Neesham.
But in the last ball of the 18th over, Mohammad Mithun played an unnecessary shot and caught by Mitchell Santner in the deep square leg. He scored 6 runs of 39 balls. Kyle Jamieson took his first wicket in the match by returning Mithun.
Mushfiqur also could not increase the run target. The wicket-keeper batsman returned by giving an easy catch to Neesham in his own ball. Before returning, he scored 21 runs off 44 balls.
Later, none other than Mahmudullah Riyad could stay at the crease for long. He remained unbeaten on 76 runs till the end of the innings. No other batsman could touch the double-digit score.
James Neesham single-handedly took 5 wickets for New Zealand. Matt Henry took four wickets and Kyle Jamieson took one.
