UNB, Khulna :Bangladesh suffered a mini batting collapse but recovered to take a lead of 266 with five second-innings wickets in hand, at stumps on an enthralling day 4 of the 2nd Test of the three-match Bashundhara Cement Series against Zimbabwe at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium here on Thursday. That meant the Tigers ended the day with the scoreboard reading 201/5 off 64 overs in their second innings. Number 4 Mahmudullah scored the team highest, remaining unbeaten on a patient 63 off 129 balls with seven fours. Together with Shuvagata Hom, he has been part of an unbroken 56-run stand for the 6th wicket. in 21 overs, in the 6th wicket stand. That matched an earlier identical 3rd wicket stand between Mahmudullah and Mominul Haque, although that was broken when Mominul was caught by Regis Chakabva off Malcolm Waller.Mominul Haque scored 54 runs off 97 balls with six fours 131/3 in 40.3 overs. Opener Tamim Iqbal had given the Tigers a breezy start, looking more the dasher of old than the grafter witnessed in the first innings here, dispatching four flashy boundaries, including two in a row off Tinashe Panyangara. But off the very next ball, Panyangara out-thought the impulsive Bangladeshi opener to have him lunging at one that was held back slightly, and brilliantly caught the return off his own bowling. Tamim’s opening partner Shamsur Rahman also hit four boundaries, but his 23 off 71 balls was a decidedly more dour affair than Tamim’s 20. Shamsur was captured by Waller, who triggered the failure of the Tigers middle-order with his zippy off-spin, taking four of the wickets to fall. When Bangladesh’s two most senior and experienced players, Shakib al Hasan (6) and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) fell to consecutive Waller deliveries, it was almost panic stations for the Tigers. But Mahmudullah and Shuvagata Hom then displayed admirable maturity to steady the ship, and the Tigers will feel any target from here on in will be defendable on a pitch showing dramatic wear and tear. Earlier, Zimbabwe were dismissed just before lunch for 368 in their first innings, having resumed from their overnight 331 for 5.Hamilton Masakadza started with 154 runs and finished scoring 158 runs off 326 balls with 17 fours and two sixes. Another overnight batsman Regis Chakabva, who started the day 75 not out, made his maiden Test century before being lbw off Taijul Islam at 101 runs off 226 balls with 13 fours. The remaining batsmen failed to touch double digit score for visiting side on 4th day. Leading all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan grabbed five wickets for 80 runs off 41 overs, his 13th 5-wicket haul in Tests. With this, he also joined an elite list of players – the others being Gary Sobers, Ian Botham, Mushtaq Mohammad and Jacques Kallis – to have scored a century and taken 5 wickets in an innings in the same Test more than once. Taijul Islam took 3/96 runs off 32.1 overs, and pacer Rubel Hossain took 2/55 runs off his 22 overs.
