Staff Reporter :
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman regretted that the government did not keep any allocation for the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCTF) in the proposed budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2014-15.
He, in a written statement, called upon the government to allocate for the BCCTF before passing the proposed budget in the parliament in a bid to fight against the adverse impact of the climate change.
The government, he says, allocated Tk 2,700 crore for
the BCCTF last four FYs. “We have been astonished at the government’s silence to the issue this time.”
According to Bangladesh Climate Change Work Strategy, there is no alternative to the fund allocation for this sector.
He insisted on the transparency, the accountability and the complete implementation of the allocated money.
In this connection, the TIB has drawn the attention of the government to the funding of the climate change affected countries by the economically developed countries.
Dr Iftekaruzzaman held the developed countries responsible for the climate change and said that they should compensate the affected countries.
He also requested the government to take up the issue with them.
