Tigers one up in series against Aussies: Thrilling finish

Bangladesh recorded a historic and a thrilling 20-run victory over Australia on the fourth day of the first Test match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Wednesday. It was maiden Test victory for the Tigers against the Aussies.
Electing to bat first, the Tigers made 260 in the first innings on the first day (Sunday).
In reply, Australia scored 217 in the first innings on the second day (Monday).
Then Bangladesh made 221 in the second innings on the third day (Tuesday).
Later, the Aussies scored 244 in the second innings on the fourth day to concede defeat to the hosts.
The Aussies were on 109 for the loss of two wickets before the bails were drawn on the third day.
David Warner and Steve Smith resumed their second innings with the over-night score of 75 and 25 runs respectively.
Warner and Smith added 49 runs on the fourth day before Warner was trapped leg before wicket by Shakib Al Hasan when the Aussies total was 158 for the loss of three wickets.
Warner hit a superb 112. His 135-ball innings had 16 fours and a sixer.
World’s best all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan played the key role in demolishing Australia’s second innings. He finished his terrific spell as 28-7-85-5. Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan gave him a good support to wrap up Australia’s second innings. Taijul Islam grabbed three wickets at the cost 60 runs, while Miraz bagged a pair of wickets for 80 runs.
Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan completed his first innings spell capturing five wickets for 68 runs. Shakib Al Hasan hit a marvelous 84 in the first innings. Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match-winning performance. It was Shakib’s second 10-wicket haul in his Test career.
Dashing Opener Tamim Iqbal was the other cricketer of Bangladesh who performed really well. Tamim notched up 71 in the first innings and hit 78 in the second innings.
After Warner dismissal, Steve Smith was caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim off Shakib Al Hasan when the Aussies total was 171 for the loss of four wickets. Smith scored 37 from 99 balls with three fours.
Then Peter Handscomb was caught by Soumya Sarkar off Taijul Islam when the visitors’ total was 187 for the loss of five wickets.
Fifth-down Mathew Wade (4) was trapped leg before wicket by Shakib Al Hasan when the tourists’ score was 192 for the loss of six wickets.
After removal off Mathew Wade, Ashton Agar (2) was caught & bowled by Taijul Islam when Australia’s total was 195 for the loss of seven wickets.
Glenn Maxwell (14) was cleanly bowled out by Shakib Al Hasan when the Aussies score was 199 for the loss of eight wickets. Shakib fulfilled his five-wicket haul by dismissing Maxwell.
After Maxwell departure, Nathan Lyon (12) was caught at the slip by Soumya Sarkar off Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the visitors’ total was 228 for the loss of nine wickets.
Then Josh Hazlewood was trapped leg before wicket for a duck by Taijul Islam and the Aussies innings came to an end.
Pat Cummins remained unbeaten with 33. He hit two sixes and three fours in his 55-ball knock.
The second Test match between Bangladesh and Australia will be held at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong beginning from September 4 to September 8.
