Rangpur Correspondent :
Thousands of people at different villages under Kawnia upazila in the district are being compelled to cross a bamboo-made bridge to come to Haragachh municipality in the upazila every day amid serious risk owing to lack of a permanent bridge over the river Manas at Banglabazar-Char Chatura point of the municipality.
Around 30,000 people of different villages including Mayabazar, Tangribazar, Char Chatura, Milonbazar, Pallimari and Dhumgara cross the bridge for going to the markets, offices and educational institutions in the municipality every day.
The school going children face great difficulties in reaching their institutions through the bamboo bridge. Most of them do not go to school in the rainy season for fear of accidents on the bridge, locals alleged.
But no step has been taken so far to build a concrete bridge over the river, locals further alleged. Farmers of the areas are the worst sufferers as they are facing setback to carry their products to different areas. The growers have to carry agricultural products to the district town, travelling around 20 km long alternative road.
“We can hardly make any profit as we have to spend extra money as carrying cost,” said Hashem Ali, a trader of Pallimari village of the upazila.
“The bridge becomes much risky in the monsoon. The bamboos get slippery and we cannot cross it easily. Sometimes the bamboos get damaged, yet we have to cross the bridge every day”, said Obaidul, a resident of Milonbazar area.
The authorities concerned should take immediate steps to mitigate people’s suffering, said Nazrul Mia, a local UP member.
Rezaul Karim, 8 no ward Councillor of Haragachh municipality said the present mayor of the municipality is very much keen to erect a permanent bridge over the river Manas. The construction work will start as soon as they get necessary fund, he added.
