The lakhs of Rohingyas who fled away from Myanmar to escape persecution there have been living in unsecured condition.
They took shelter at 13 temporary Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf Upazilas of the district. The camps were built by cutting forests on 5,000 acres of land.
According to passport department, at least 10.75 lakh Rohingyas have already been registered.
After a recent spot visit, it was found that thousands of Rohingyas are fleeing every day from the unsecured camps as there is no demarcation wall. They are going to different places of the country through roads of Kutupalang, Madhurchhara, Dailpara, Machkaria, Shilerchhara, Patabari, Lombaghona, Dargahbil, Hangarghona, Ajukhaiya, Tulatoli and Koribonia Villages.
Locals said Rohingyas have been entering Ramu Upazila of the district by CNG-run auto-rickshaws and tomtoms (locally-made vehicles) every day since March 1. They are going to different districts and divisional towns including Dhaka, Chittagong, Feni and Comilla by long-route transport.
The Myanmar army threatened the Rohingyas by deploying additional forces, stocking heavy weaponry and building bunkers at Zero Point. After that the Rohingyas who took shelter at Kutupalang, Balukhali and Thaingkhali have been moving to other places every day.
There is allegation that numerous Rohingyas took shelter in Ukhia and Teknaf after August 25 of 2017. Along with different socio-political organisations, the affluent people of the country came forward to supply food and other necessary materials to the Rohingyas from humanitarian ground.
When the news spread that the Rohingyas are getting adequate relief, more Rohingyas came to Bangladesh rapidly. A group of fundamentalist started to distribute money instead of relief, turning the situation worst. The local administration had to give hard effort to control the situation. So the armed forces took over the charge to look after the Rohingyas. The armed forces brought the situation under control within a week.
Though the Rohingyas have been living in 13 camps, they have no discipline. They are going to other places coming out from the camp.
Concerned authority said over 1 lakh Rohingyas fled away in the last six months. They think that the armed forces should count the number of Rohingyas according to the registration otherwise they may occurr any untoward incident inside the country. The people of Ukhia and Teknaf demanded rehabilitation of the Rohingyas at Thengarchar of Noakhali District.
President of Rohingya Prattyabashan Sangram Committee Principal Hamidul Haque Chowdhury said, “The Rohingyas are fleeing every day. It is hard to control them. I think that the repatriation may be halted if they stay in Ukhia for long. If they are not shifted to other places, the people of Ukhia and Teknaf will fall in trouble.”
