Thousands of peopleof tenvillages of Doarabazar upazila have been suffering a lot for not having a bridge on Mara Surma River at Mangalpur Bazar in the upazila.
People of the three unions of the upazila have been demanding for a concrete bridge over the river for the last several decades but still, there is no headway as the local administration did not pay any heed to their demand.
Villagers have to cross a bamboo bridge risking their lives due to the absence of a concrete bridge on the river.
Locals built the bamboo bridge over the river near Mangalpur Bazar-Bajitpur village inPandargaonunion at their own cost and also maintain it each year.
Residents of Sadar, Mannargaon andPandargaonunions have to cross the bridge every day to reach their destinations as the bridge is the only means of communication for them.
Besides, the students of Mangalpur Dakhil Madrasah, Hazi Kanumia High School and Sonapur Kawmi Madrasah have to go to their institutes amid high risk as some portion of the bridge have been collapsed by the strong current in the rainy season.
Now the bridge is in a vulnerable condition and people are crossing it amid risk, according to locals.
Masuk Mia, a trader, said a bamboo of the bridge recently washed away, leaving the bridge more risky to cross.

Besides, a farmer drowned in the river after falling off the bridge but the incident did not compel any authorities concerned to take necessary steps in this regard.
Faruk Hasan, chairman ofPandargaonUnion Parishad, said people have been suffering here for long and demanding for a bridge. “The matter was informed to the authorities concerned,” he said.
