UNB, Dhaka :
Claiming Ziaur Rahman the proclaimer of the country’s independence, BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy on Saturday said those who do not accept it are war criminals and traitors.
“Those who don’t accept Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence, they’re real war criminals and traitors…they don’t believe in the country’s Liberation War and also democracy,” he alleged.
He claimed that, Ziaur Rahman had announced independence on March 26, 1971 declaring him as the country’s President.
No political party including, Awami League, did challenge Zia as the President from March 26 to April 17 of 1971.
The BNP leader came up with the view while addressing a human chain programme organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijuddher Projonmo in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Admitting the fact of having freedom fighters with the Awami League, Goyeshawr termed them ‘expatriate freedom fighters’.
Goyeshwar also criticised Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for allowing debate in parliament by the lawmakers to censure BNP, including its chairperson and her eldest son, in their absence.
“Had she been experienced, she (Speaker) would not have allowed anyone to criticize BNP rather issued ruling against it. Some unelected MPs made libelous remarks which don’t fall in any parliamentary norms.” he added.
