THE viral video footage that showed the Chief Controller of Imports & Exports (CCI&E) is counting currency notes apparently collected as bribes and putting the cash in his pocket made sensational news few days back. But then another sensation hits the nation that says the Commerce Ministry, which controls the CCI&E has only withdrawn the officer from the post to the Ministry passing it as if he has been punished for indulging in the scandal.
Several businessmen earlier filed complaints against the CCI&E with the Ministry of Commerce blaming that he never issues any import-export certificate without handsome payment. Taking the complaints in cognition, the Ministry put in place the filming technique of handing over of bribe money and such other corruptions in public office. He hit the net. Then why the Ministry is soft on him is the biggest question. Reports said when a senior official takes bribes he acts for many by sharing the benefits that goes up to the highest level of the Ministry and therefore he also enjoys many safeguards at important places. It partly explains why the CCI&E has been withdrawn and not fired or even not served a notice to explain his conduct.
So it is true that the government stands for zero tolerance for any corrupt practice and yet corruption is protected and running on unabated. Corruption in public administration is an open secret but disciplinary or legal action was taken only on few occasions. Commerce Secretary however said the Ministry would probe into the case and if the official is found involved in the bribery case, he would be suspended from his post.
The concerned official however said he was victim of conspiracy ignoring the live video footage. But people who worked with him reportedly said he had involvement in improper acts at all places including the Commerce Ministry, Tariff Commission, and Export Promotion Bureau.
One thing is clear that there is no need of hide and seek about corruption in the government. There is transparency in corruption. The people are the helpless victims for all to see.
