The dark side of student politics

NURUL HAQUE NUR, the elected Vice-President of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), was assaulted by some of his opponents in Bogura on Sunday, the second time in a week. Nur as a representative of the quota reformists was elected VP of DUCSU defying all institutional arrangement for rigging the election allegedly in favour of ruling party’s student front. By this election victory at the university campus, Nur emerged as the elected spokesman of oppressed and deprived students. Nur apparently challenged the hegemonic rule of DU Administration while political oppositions fail to wage any effective movement against the hegemony.
In Bogura, 25-30 persons attacked Nur and his friends around 5:00 pm as Nur along with some general students was preparing for an Iftar party on Woodburn Public Library premises. On Saturday, Nur was also barred from holding an Iftar party in Brahmanbaria in the same way. The attackers also harassed Jamuna TV cameraperson, who was covering the incident and tried to snatch his camera.
Police, in both Bogura and Brahmanbaria, acted as bystanders while the attackers were beating Nur. It’s regrettable. We witnessed warm relation among the student bodies after the winning of Nur in the DUCSU polls, but the situation has changed now. Such type of intolerance is not a good sign for any student organisation and its leadership.
It may be our historic movement of independence or the Language Movement, DUCSU played a crucial role in shaping the country’s history. Not only that, DUCSU is the factory of producing new national leaders. A good number of national leaders were produced by DUCSU who played significant roles in the country’s crisis moments. Even, many are even glittering stars in country’s today’s political sky.
We are very much shocked hearing the news of assault on DUCSU VP in the open daylight. How a student leader could be beaten in such a way? Already three to four times he has been insulted. There is no difference between insulting DUCSU VP and insulting the DUCSU. It’s not understandable why police play the role of bystanders and let the incident to take place. We must say, the perpetrators should be brought to book without wasting any time.
