Three persons, including a suspected drug peddler, were killed in ‘gunfights’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chapainawabganj and Chattaogram early Friday.
Two of them were identified as Habibur Rahman,
42, hailed from Patiya upazila of the district, and Mosharrf, 22, hailed from Burichang upazila of Cumilla district.
Two pistols, two magazines, five rounds of bullets and six and half kilograms of hemp were recovered from the spot, RAB officials said.
In Chattogram, a team of elite force conducted a special operation in the port city’s Barisal colony area, which is infamously known as a drug den, around 12.00am. Sensing the presence of RAB members, the criminals opened fire at them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, leaving two people belonging to the narcotics group dead, said ASP Mimtanur Rahman of RAB-7.
Later, locals identified them as Habibur Rahman and Mosharef.
The bodies were sent to Chattagram Medical College and Hospital for autopsy, the RAB official said.
In Chapainawabganj, following a tip-off, a team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp started an anti-drug operation in Tantipara Ghat area in the upazila around 2:00am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire at them, which prompted a ‘gunfight’, our local correspondent reports quoting Abul Khayer, Additional Superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj Camp of RAB-5.
After the gunfight stopped, a suspect was found injured with bullet. He was taken to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead, Abul Khayer said.
