Our western friends often call us to uphold humanity, to fight for humanity and to die for humanity, without defining what humanity is. In this situation, we may derive the concrete idea of humanity from a Hadith incorporated in the Bukhari Sharif.
After receiving the first five verses of the Holy Quran (86/1-5), the Prophet Muhammad (SM) returned to his house from the Cave of Light in 610 A.D. The Prophet was looking bit shaky, frightened. He said to Khadiza, his wife, “I know not whether I shall be able to bear the great responsibility conferred upon me by my Lord.”
Khadiza (Ra) said, “By thy Lord, I can say that He will not disgrace thee. Certainly, He will help thee to triumph because thou posses all the seven qualities of humanity a man should have.” Khadiza continued to say, 1) you stand by your relatives, pay their dues and behave properly. 2) always speak the truth, 3) are faithful to your trusts, 4) arrange feeding, clothing and sheltering the orphans, widows, blinds, lames and the needy, 5) get jobs for jobless people, 6) serve the guests, and 7) help people who are victims of natural calamities.
Now, we may draw conclusion that we should ameliorate qualities of humanity so that we may make our society garden of bliss. There is no need to learn definition of humanity from the west.
