Xinhua, Bangkok :
The Thai Rice Exporters Association said on Wednesday that it is increasing the kingdom’s rice export project for the second half of this year to 11 million tons from an earlier estimate of 9.5 million tons.
Thailand has slid to the second place behind India with the latter’s rice export reaching 6.23 million tons, an increase of 1.1 percent.
Between Jan. 1 and July 20, Thailand exported 6.15 million tons of rice, valued at 3.1 million U.S. dollars.
Vietnam is third with 4.33 million tons – a whopping increase of 18.9 percent.
Thai Rice Exporters Association president Charoen Lathammatat said he was not disheartened with the slide in ranking.
“This is our (Thailand’s) opportunity with the weakening of the Thai baht,” said Charoen. “There is also a growing demand of rice from countries such as Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.”
Charoen also said Thailand is able to export more rice as a result of the recent clearance of rice stockpiles from warehouses across the country.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday said it is continuing to export Thai Jasmine Rice into the United States, the largest importer of Jasmine Rice.
