Tentulia’s dam collapses, settlements under threat

The main embankment of Borhanuddin Upazila broken due to severe erosion of Tentulia River.The ring embankment also collapsed at several places.
The 75-year-old educational institution with a settlement of several thousand people in the three unions is under threat. Residents of the area, including the people’s representatives of the area, have demanded immediate reconstruction of embankment to protect settlements and educational institutions.
It has been seen on the ground that the paved road from Jaya Vaya Moulvir Hat to Khair Hat in Gangapur Union, which was once used as the main embankment, passes through Ward No. 2 and 3 of Kutuba Union, Ward No. 4 of South Joynagar Union and Ward No. 1 and 2 of Gangapur Union. Road connecting dam has disappeared in the river. The Ring embankment, built by the Water Development Board about two and a half years ago, it was also collapsed in 7-8 places. As a result, in case of high tide or natural calamity, water will easily enter the locality. Mizanur Rahman, Miraj Hossain, Sirajul Islam and Obaidul Haque of ward number three of Kutuba Union said, “We will lose our land if we do not take immediate steps to build the embankment.”
Maulana Nesaruddin, Hafeez Zafar Sharif and Ashraf Farooq of ward number two of the same union said that the ring embankment in the river has broken. We see helpless breakage and spend our days in terror. Chhota Manika Fazil Madrasa is located in ward number two. Madrasa principal Saifullah said that there are 650 students in the madrasa. The distance from the river to the madrasa is only 20-25 feet. If the embankment is not constructed immediately, the madrasa will go under the river. Students in the area will be in deep crisis.
Kutuba Union Chairman Nazmul Ahsan Jobayed said that in the last two years, more than 500 families in wards one and two have lost their homes. This number will continue to increase if the embankment is not constructed in the current dry season.
Ward 4 of Daulatkhan Upazila Dakshin Joynagar Union between Gangapur and Kutuba Union adjoining the river. Residents of the ward Jebal Haque Dalal, Ibrahim Member, Monir Hossain, Ruhul Amin, Abdul Gani said their houses were only 10-15 yards away from the collapsed dam.
