Due to heavy rainfall, the upstream slope and the opening of all the gates in Gazaldoba Barrage in India, the water level of the Teesta has risen sharply and is flowing at 65 cm above the danger level. As a result, there has been a terrible flood in Lalmonirhat.
Meanwhile, flood waters of Teesta were breached in Gaddimari, Singimari, Sindurna, Patikapara, Dauwabari, Saniajan of Hatibandha, Votmari of Kaliganj, Mahishkhocha of Aditmari and Khuniagach, Rajpur and Gokunda Union of Sadar upazila. As a result, 30,000 families in 4 upazilas of Lalmonirhat of the Teesta char areas and coastal areas have been trapped in water.
Meanwhile, with the increase in water, thousands of hectares of paddy, winter vegetables and maize fields have been submerged. Roads are broken by water some of the places.
Mizanur Rahman, executive engineer of the Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said the Teesta water level rose above the danger level on Wednesday morning as upstream hill slope and all the gates of the India’s Gazaldoba Barrage were opened.
In order to control the water, 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage were opened to protect the barrage of Teesta.
But due to heavy water, the 300 meters of the flood bypass was broken in the morning and caused severe flood. Hundreds of houses in the vicinity of the barrage area were washed away by the flood water. The families have left their homes and taken shelter in higher ground as water entered their houses in the flood-hit areas.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar said the Teesta water has increased suddenly. Adequate food aid is being prepared for waterlogged families. He added that the Upazila Nirbahi officials are providing assistance to the flood-hit families.
