A young boy allegedly committed suicide after police physically assaulted him, his mother, and sisters.
The incident took place in the city’s Badamtoli Boro Masjid area under Double Mooring Police Station on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Salman Islam Maruf, a tenth grader of a local high school.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has suspended a Sub Inspector in connection with the incident, identified as Md Helal Uddin.
The CMP also formed a two-member probe body in connection with the incident.
According to the locals, a cycle and a mobile phone owned by Maruf got stolen some days back.
Last night, a man was peeping into his house and the teenager allegedly beat the man up, suspecting him of being a thief.
The man introduced himself as a police informant. After a while, Sub Inspector Helal Uddin, in plainclothes, came to the spot and tried to pick the boy up.
The teenager’s mother and sisters engaged in a tussle with them when they tried to detain him.
At one point, one of Maruf’s sisters fainted on the spot. Later, the police took his sister and mother to the hospital for treatment. However, Maruf thought that the police detained his mother and sister.
Later, the teenager committed suicide, hanging himself in his house.
Sadip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Double Mooring Police Station said the sub inspector was suspended in connection with the incident.
“A probe body has already been formed and departmental action will be taken if he is found to be guilty,” said the OC.
The OC said the sub inspector had not taken any prior permission from higher authorities to conduct the drive.
Locals have staged demonstrations protesting the incident and demanding action against the police officer.
An unnatural death case has been lodged in this connection. The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
