Prof Rezaul killing: Teachers vow to continue protests

“We do not want assurance only, but trial of the killers of Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee,” said Professor Dr. Farid Uddin Ahmed, President of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA).
 “It has become a culture on the paert of the law enforcing agencies and the ministry of home always to swear to arrest the killer(s) after every murder, but most of the time, there is no result finally,” he said.
He said these at a Rajshahi University rally organised by the RU Teachers’ Association on the campus at 11:00 am, adding that the protest programme will continue in the country’s all the public universities.
Professor Dr. Maksud Kamal of FBUTA, called for speedy trial of the Prof Rezaul murder case. ” It is sad that we have received no condolence message from either the home minister or the education minister. We were expecting them at Rajshahi, at least to visit the victim’s family”, he uttered.
FBUTA will submit a memorandum to the ministry of home tomorrow (Thursday).
RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin labelled the Prof Rezaul Karim as an attempt to shatter the educational environment on the university campus, the place of free-thinking. The professor urged the teachers and the students to continue the protests till the period we receive judgment.
Prof Rezaul’s daughter Rizwana Hasin Shatovi in her speech urged the government to stop the culture of impunity from society.” I have said lots for 11 days, but now I want justice only”, she also said. The deceased wife Hosne Ara echoed her daughter’s speech.
Expressing their solidarity, MP and General Secretary of Workers Party of Bangladesh Fazle Hossain Badsha, RU Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, RUET Teachers’ Association President Prof Nirendranath Mustafi, Begum Rokeya University Teachers’ Association General Secretary Prof Tabiur Rahman and Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Prof Mukaddam Hossain, among others, were present.
Earlier, RU English department brought out a silent procession on the campus at 10:00am and joined the rally after parading the main streets.
Besides, the teachers and the students of International Relations, Anthropology, Institute of Education and Research, Population Science and Human Resource Development, Islamic Studies, Genetic Engineering, Arabic, Political Science, Drama and Marketing department joined the rally. RUTA also arranged a candle-light programme yesterday (Tuesday) evening.
