Assaults on JU teacher: Teachers, students demand trial

The teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday demanded fair investigation into the assault on one of the university teachers for justice.
Around two hundred students of Journalism and Media studies (JMS) Department vandalised buses and blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway through torching tyers. The teachers of different departments, including the president of JU teachers association Prof.Khabir Uddin, extended their supports to the students.
The students took to the streets around 12:40 pm, causing several kilometers of tailback on both lanes across the campus while the agitated students vandalised at least four buses and beat up a police member near the main entrance of the university.
The protestors chanted slogans against the sergeant and demanded his life time expulsion from service. They also urged the JU authority to take appropriate action.
Moudud Ahmed Sujan, a final year student of JMS dept. said that they would return their dormitories if the sergeant was dismissed permanently.
Around 3:00 pm, the protestors withdraw their blockade after the Vice-Chancellor of JU, Prof. Farzana Islam assured the students of justice.
The V.C also said that two probe bodies were formed to investigate the matter for submission of their reports within three working days.
“The decision of filing a case will be taken after a meeting with the teachers and students of the department”, she added.
Source said, the angry students took the street as one of their teachers Assistant Professor Rakib Ahmed was assaulted by Imran, a Police sergeant on Saturday night at House building area in Uttara when he was going to the airport railway station to board a Sylhet bound train driving his car on the wrong lane.
The sergeant allegedly wanted to seize the car and assaulted the teacher physically and brought him (Rakib) to the near police box.
