The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has asked the teachers of the primary schools to take extra classes to increase the students reading and writing skills.
The Ministry took the initiative after finding weakness of the students in Bangla and English.
They cannot read, write and speak both Bangla and English languages properly.
The Ministry thinks that the students’ weakness in the languages will hinder achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a result, the Ministry has sent letters to all the primary schools recently asking to take extra classes in improving the students basic skills.
The letter said, most of the students of primary schools across the country are weak in Bangla and English. They are admitted to the secondary level institutions with the basic weakness after passing the Primary Education Completion Examination.
The Ministry also gave some instruction to the teachers for executing the programme.
The instruction includes, Assigning the students to read at least a page from Bangla and English books to increase reading habit with a view to improving language skills.
A student must write at least a page at home every day and to submit to the teachers.
The reading of the book must be compulsory. The teachers will recite with the students.
Pronunciation competition has to arrange to increase mental strength to the students.
Utilisation of Book corner and SRM must be ensured. The teachers will teach students at least a Bangla and English word in the classroom every day.
Secretary of the Primary and Mass Education Md Akram Hossain told The New Nation on Sunday that the Ministry sees positive sign and expect good results from the “Reading and Writing Skills” concept.
“The Ministry’s senior officials are discharging their duties at least in two districts as the mentor to implement it properly. I am also working in two districts. We are visiting the districts and holding meetings with the Headmasters and other officials concern,” he said.
He said that in Upazila level, the Assistant Thana Education Officer (ATEO) leads the programme with the support of the teachers.
There are a total of 65,593 government primary schools in the country.
