Tea garden workers demanding salary hike

Workers of 21 tea gardens on Wednesday thurndered in Sylhet for an agreement between the garden owners and the workers to increase their daily wage to Tk 300 from Tk 102.
The worker demanded implementation of the agreement before the forthcoming Durga Puja and payment of their arrears of 22 months, as owners assured them of raising salary from January 2019.
They called from a human chain formed in front of the main entrance of government-run Lakkatura Tea Garden office in the city at around 11:00am after their two-hour work abstention from 9:00am, the workers said.
The worker leaders alleged that no effective step had been taken so far in this regard despite they met five times with the government wage board to implement their demands.
They also threatened to observe the two-hour work abstention on every working day if their demands were not met before Durga Puja.
Hundreds of workers from 21 tea gardens in and around the city gathered in front of the Lakkatura Garden to participate in the demonstration abstaining from their work to press home the demands.
Lakkatura Cha Bagan Panchayet Committee president Shitul Lohar presided over the rally addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Tea Worker Unionos Sylhet Valley President Raju Goala, Lakkatura Cha Bagan Panchayet Committee General Secretary Sohel Nayek, labour leader Niren Goala, Lutan Goala and Ripan Goala, Malnichhara Tea Garden Panchayet Committee President Jiten Sabar and its leader Joy Mahatma Purmi, Hridesh Mudi and Dilip Bauri.
