Staff Correspondent :
Expected gathering of the taxpayers was not seen in the income tax circle in the city, despite the extended deadline for submitting of the return is going to be ended on Thursday.
Tax officials said the number of the income tax return submission is comparatively lower at the moment but it will be increased in coming two or three days as return submission is mandatory for the taxpayer identification number (TIN) holders this year. Several makeshift booths have already been closed due to the thin presence and the taxpayers are now submitting their files to the concerned deputy commissioners’ offices, they said.
Visiting different tax circles in the city’s Paltan area, this correspondent found that the circles were almost empty and the officials were passing their idle time.
Rashed Reza, Deputy Commissioner of Tax Zone-3, said, “Return submission ratio is comparatively lower at the moment as most of the taxpayers have filed their returns before November 30. Those, who did not file their returns during that time, are now submitting their files. Hopefully, the rest of the taxpayers will submit their return within the deadline.”
He also said that some taxpayers are still seeking further time extension by filing time petition.
Wishing anonymity, another deputy commissioner said the return submission is comparatively lower than the previous year due to the ongoing pandemic situation.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) extended the deadline for income tax return submission till December 31.
The extension had come following demands from various quarters as majority of taxpayers were yet to file their income statements amid spiraling coronavirus infections and disruption in the collection of documents and preparing them.
As of November 30, some 1748587 of the holders of 50 lakh taxpayer identification numbers (TIN) had filed the returns of their income and total revenue collection was Tk 3028 crore from the sector till the mentioned time.
Around 22 lakh taxpayers filed returns in the last year as submission was not mandatory. This year, taxmen expect to receive a higher number of returns because of changes in the law made while passing the national budget for fiscal 2020-21.
