Fair draws huge crowd: Tax payer`s number will be 2.5m: Muhith

A weeklong Income Tax Fair began on Tuesday and drew huge response from taxpayers, much to the delight of the National Board of Revenue, which is expecting revenue more than target.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, who inaugurated the fair at the under-construction Agargaon National Board of Revenue (NBR) building in the capital.
NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman presided over the function while State Minister for Finance MA Mannan and FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmed were present as special guests.
The finance minister said, “Many countries, including the US, follow this system,”.
Subsequently, he asked the NBR to work towards it.
The number of tax payers will be about 25 lakh this year, hoped Muhith.
Tax-friendly environment must be created for assisting the government’s development works, MA Mannan said.
The FBCCI president recommended for the tax laws to make it easier so that people
became interest to pay tax. He also suggested building the tax complex building in every district.
Taxpayers are submitting their returns for fiscal 2016-17 and getting acknowledgement receipts on the spot.
Fresh taxpayers will also be able to get taxpayer identification numbers online and those who still have the manually issued TINs is getting assistance to re-register for e-TIN.
Senior Tax official Syed A M’umen said that this year online tax-paying facilities would be a new attraction for the visitors. This year, the NBR is collecting income tax returns in both old and new formats.
To reduce the hassles of the taxpayers, the NBR simplified the income tax return form from this fiscal. Instead of the eight-page form, the taxpayers from this year will fill up a three-page form in the new format.
November 30 will be the last date for the submission of income tax returns unlike the previous years when September 30 was the last date for the submission.
109 booths have been setup in 62 thousand square feet area at the fair. Separate booths have been arranged for freedom fighters, senior citizens, women and disable persons.
The fair is open from 10am and continue till 5pm every day.
